Heritage Workshops and Talks

Ever wondered how to find out about your family roots to discover that axe murderer or pretender to a royal throne? Or how to restore that rather weathered table in the basement – or what about a whole house? Wouldn’t it be interesting to find out how the craftspeople at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival designed and created the magical costumes and stage set for this year’s The Importance of Being Earnest?

For two days, Saturday October 17 and Sunday October 18, a series of workshops and talks for those interested in genealogy, furniture restoration and heritage crafting will be presented by Stratford’s genealogical and antique experts, professional craftspeople and artisans.

Introduction to Genealogy
Workshop will focus on “getting started” as a family historian. The instructors will describe commonly available records, such as early birth, death and marriage registrations, that would be useful to all beginning  genealogists. While they will provide detailed information about Stratford and Perth County sources, they can also assist participants whose ancestors lived elsewhere. The workshop will include tips on keeping track of information and where it came from. There will be ample time for participants to ask specific questions about their own family research and plenty of hand-outs.

Ontario Antique Furniture
Ontario was settled by the Irish, English, Scottish, French, Germans and many more cultures. Each group brought to new world furniture making, their own styles and cabinet making traditions. Peter Land, of Land & Ross Antiques, Shakespeare, Ontario, shows examples of how these influences show up in old Ontario furniture. He's here to answer your questions and offer information for prospective buyers and collectors.
